The history of reiki is important, but perhaps not for the reasons you think. I believe that there are good reasons why certain parts of the story remain, while others fall away and are forgotten. Hidden within the story of the reiki origins are clues that reveal how we can be better practitioners.
Dr. Usui's background is important to notice because he actually studied Christianity. Had he not been familiar with it (and the religions) reiki may never have been able to catch on in the United States. I also like to look at the history of Dr. Usui and see that when an emergency arose, he briefly showed people how to use it, passed the attunement and created an army of practitioners that knew the "miracle cure." Dr. Usui also though taught very in-depth classes to formal students. I try to mirror that in my own practice. My time and resources are marketable, but reiki is free.
Mr. Hayashi healed Mrs. Takata. That's all well and good, but within the story is the key to technique. Mr Hayashi performed reiki on her every day for a month. Many, MANY reiki practitioners claim that you only need a reiki treatment once a week and from my experience, that simply is not true. It certainly will improve your life, but the "miracles" happen when a person is given reiki treatments every day for a month. I have seen the “miracles” happen with the use of reiki, but not usually from once a week treatments. I know people don't want to hear it. They don't want to take the time and money to do it. That's just how it is though. You wouldn't tell a doctor you'd really rather see results from an antibiotic and only take one every few days when you think about it.
Even still though, it can get expensive. The solution for clients is to get an attunement and become a practitioner themselves. That way, they can give reiki to themselves every single day for a month. Usually it costs about the same as only two treatments to become a certified level one practitioner.
My goal is to spread reiki, not to make people dependent on me.
